An emergency alert test message will flash across cellphone and TV screens on Wednesday as the government tests the system it uses to inform the public of emergencies.

Key Details

  • Starting at 2:20 p.m. ET Wednesday, wireless phone users whose devices are on will receive a message reading: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed."
  • People whose phones are turned off will get the message if they turn them back on within 30 minutes of 2:20 p.m. Anyone who turns their phone on after this time will not receive the test message.
  • Americans watching broadcast or cable television, or listening to the radio, will also hear or see a message.
